Francisco Smythe (Puerto Montt, 1952 – Santiago de Chile, 1998). He held a Bachelor of Art from the Facultad de Bellas Artes in the Universidad de Chile, where he later became a drawing and painting professor from 1974 to 1981. Between 1971 and 1992 he participated in numerous solo and collective exhibitions, biennials, and international contests. He played an active part in the forefront of the national art scene, being a protagonist of the Chilean Escena de Avanzada. In 1998, he had his last retrospective exhibition Diario de Viaje IV in Santiago de Chile, but he passed away before the official opening. He received the Premio de la Crítica and the Premio de las Artes de la Universidad de Artes, Ciencias y Comunicación.
